How To Avoid Being A “Robot Doctor”
Check this out. What you will see is the story of a first-year medical student who desperately wants to avoid becoming a “robot doctor.” She has seen doctors who have no compassion for their patients, and doesn’t have any interest in joining their ranks. Pictured above is a “Medicine and The Muse” retreat that she attended, at which doctors-in-the-making work on developing compassion by writing stories, many about themselves. For example, one exercise has participants write their own obituaries.
Bottom Line. Even in her first semester of medical school, Lauren has no trouble seeing how even well-intentioned men and women can become robot doctors. In fact, she already felt herself slipping into becoming a robot student. Importantly, this insight caused her to take active steps to avoid this degenerative process. Steps like attending the retreat, and coming to grips with the fact that doctors must be ready to face their own foibles.
I think she is going to be a very good doctor!
