The woman pictured above is a walking case study in empathy. She has been a nurse. AND an anesthesiologist. SO. She is a very appropriate blogger to write on tele-empathy, the use of technology to create empathy for patients with specific medical conditions. LIKE. Using a device to create the tremors experienced by a patient with Parkinson’s to “improve insight into the patient experience.”
Like so many bright shiny new things, this use of technology to create empathy sort of makes sense at first blush. BUT. As Dr. Leng concludes, “Empathy is the work of a lifetime.”
Bottom Line. Do gadgets help to create real empathy? You decide!
